July 7th, 2016 was a dark day for the country and even more for the Law Enforcement Agencies across the Nation when five officers were assassinated on the streets of Dallas. Third Degree black belt Robert Defranco was personally affected by this tragedy and took it upon himself to organize a jiu-jitsu seminar to raise money for the families. The event came to fruition in early October and our very own black belt Rob Magao was the lead off to teach. Rob has been in law enforcement for over 18 years and spoke from the heart of the devastating nature of the tragedy and the need for support for our police force.
The event was well attended and the bond that jiu-jitsu forms was magnified as students from all over the country including NY, NJ, CT flew in from the East Coast and joining them was CA, AR, FL, MS and many from across TX. Black belt instructors Gina Franssen, James Foster, Kurt Osiander, Piet Wilhelm and Anthony Mitchell came and taught and showed how much they supported the cause. The Texas crew was teaching in full force with Octavio Couto, Alan Shebaro, and Brian Marvin. The event brought support and raised over $10,000.00 to assist the families of the fallen officers. But it brought more that just monetary support but also it showed to the LEO of Dallas and surrounding cities moral support.
